Mixed vs. Queen Mary, University of London 1st
Richard Mellors
ULU League Match 31/01/09
Away
Lost 6-3
Lena & Richard
Ting Ting & Damian
Anna & Jing
This was the big game, the must-win, the icing on our cake, the final battle…..we lost.
We shouldn't feel sorry for ourselves here, QM are at the top of the table and this is the best score against them from any team in this league. RUMS played incredibly well, just falling down at the end of the games as the pressure piled on.
The venue was set for a Saturday morning near Stepney Green. We had drafted in our secret weapon in the form of busted-shoulder Damian. QM were obviously scared and also called in their top player who shall be known as the anti-Damian. Or Nigel for short.
He had been paired with the weakest girl but despite this, their star player managed to see off all 3 of our pairs. Lena & myself came back for a 3rd game against them, just losing out by a tiny points difference. We took out our anger on the next pair, Lena really dominating the net and the match for a brilliant 2-0 win. Unfortunately for us in our last pairing, the silly mistake fairy made an unwelcome appearance and that was that.
Ting Ting & Damian brought out convincing wins against their second and third (who weren't really third) pairs. I didn't catch many of these matches to be honest. Surely the quick dispatching of opponents must reflect well on them. Thanks again for playing coach and well done Ting for putting up with his helpful nudges and pointers.
Now we come to Jing & Anna. Words can't describe how close their matches were. I think I actually saw at least three of the games go past 21 points. You guys were battling through against all of your pairings. It's unlucky that you got no return for your huge effort but excellently played and we can't ask for more than that.
Overall it was a very competitive match and ended up being very closely fought. It was our hardest game yet but they were definitely sweating for a while. Well done folks.
