Nicholas Moore
ULU League Match 24/02/07
Home
Won 8-1

Players: Kara & Nick, Lena & Sam, Mareen & Luke

There's no news like good news, and though it's been a long time coming, here's the match report for the mixed team match versus Roehampton.

After a string of defeats for the mixed team, we really pulled it out the bag against a powerless Roehampton team. Their captain made excuses to us beforehand in the changing room about having a weakened team; probably because he sensed from mine and Luke's demeanour that we-meant-business!

As the match started, it became clear that this would be a walk in the park for our skilled players. Mareen and Luke making their debut as a pair were slightly shaky at first, but soon settled into a confident rhythm - they won all 3 of their rubbers against each of the Roehampton pairs. With Luke's jokey, easygoing approach to the game, and Mareen's experienced skill in managing the front of the court, they really came through for the team.

Sam and Lena were enthusiastic as ever, and perhaps out of pity, felt it necessary not to completely embarrass the Roehampton side with a walkover. Their powerful and energetic style of play earned us 2 out of their 3 rubbers.

Kara and myself played well, though I found out I have serious issues with pitying the losing side; something I will have to work on. Nevertheless, with Kara's huge wealth of skill and calm backing me up, we went on to clinch all 3 rubbers, as we well deserved.

The Roehampton team tried their best against us, but their skill was nowhere near the level of our team. A couple of individually strong players was not enough to save them from a crushing defeat by an extremely well rounded and well balanced RUMS side. RUMS BADMINTON WINS 8-1!!!!!! Hooray!!

An extremely pleasing performance, which makes us finish 3rd in the division, only below Barts and Imperial, both strong sides. I believe we would have finished higher in the league, even be promoted had we been able to field such a strong team at every match... (and were it not for Barts wily ways).

Its been a great season, and thanks to all everyone who played for the RUMS Badminton Mixed team. May the next year usher in a new era of sporting success under the guiding hand of Mareen Joy!
