Lost 7-1
(sigh)...I just don't get it. We have 6 great players, racquets, shuttles, a brilliant captain (cough, cough). What more is there? It would seem though, that there is something missing from the recipe, and I'm slowly convincing myself that it's matching team shirts. We actually do have some kicking around... Nick/Kara, please bring 4 to the next Tuesday session as it must be the key to our lack of match success. That, and 6 hours of circuit training in the coming week should do the trick.
OK, so they had matching shirts but I'd never heard of London Metropolitan before this fixture and so I assumed they were a piddly little college... I should have checked their website before: "London Metropolitan University is the largest single University in London and one of the largest in the UK with over 35000 students". Oh. Our medical school only has 2200 or so. And they teach courses with 'sport' as the first word.
A handful of the games were close but the overall result wasn't: 7-1. Hamster, panting at the end of the match, told me he wasn't fit enough to play singles, so please dig into your pockets as there will be a whipround over the coming week: we're hoping to buy him a wheel for his cage.
Mo and Marvin won the award for most tense game (19-21, 21-19, 22-24), I saw two dodgy line calls at the end of the third game which always means one of three things:
1) somebody's trying to cheat
2) the game's really tight
3) people have started hallucinating
(Mental note to self: stop giving the team magic mushrooms before matches to boost their game)
One of the Met players wins the award for most unsporstsman-like (he kept saying thank you every time I put one in the net. I really wanted to say, "it's OK, I think you need the help" but unfortunately we lost that game later so it was probably best that I didn't). Thumbs up to Matt though, who pulled out some great serves and bailed us out of many rallies. Heylong is probably one of our best singles players and is still pulling out some quality singles play, I have no doubt that the wins are just around the corner.
All in all, I am actually quite happy with the way the season is progressing for the men. I mean, we haven't actually 'won' a match yet but the standard of play was much more inspiring than that of UCL Women's firsts on the adjacent courts.
Next week the team is being graced by... yes, the celebrity himself, el Pesident, (check out his shirt for the spelling). Hopefully, the Wednesday session won't descend into anarchy when Nick takes an early leave and yes, ladies, you will miss out on his boyish good looks and charm but it's OK, you'll see him again soon. Alternatively, you can come and cheer him (and us) on at Somers Town Sports Centre from 5pm.
Happy Eid/Diwali for last week and a happy Halloween for the coming week.
