The story
So, I was a little down-heartened when I remembered last year's match report against these guys: a university with double the number of students as ALL OF UCL with lots of sports-related courses... indeed. Chris looked scared when I found him inside the sports hall. Nick and I with our years of experience, remained unfazed... or possibly ignorant to the fact that they had 2 national-standard singles players. Nevertheless, Jiehan and Jing gave it their best but couldn't quite compete.
The doubles players were closer to our ability. Guy and Chris started out seemingly well against their first pair and in the meantime, Nick and I started off on their second pair. Unfortunately, Guy and Chris didn't win but Nick and I did, proving that age wins over beauty... or something.
The second round of doubles games were very closely fought and Nick and I came out on top and Guy and Chris just fell short.
Despite another 6-2 loss, I was much happier about everything this week: Chris and Guy played much better, Jing continues to battle hard despite some stiff competition and everybody generally is up for a bit of fitness work and some drills so hopefully we'll get some good training done over the coming few weeks. All in all, seeing as London Met have had an 8-0 victory already and are hoping for promotion, we should be able to do fairly well this season... I can smell that first victory...
