Mens vs. Imperial Medicals 1st

Guy Parsons
BUCS League Match 22/10/08
Home
Lost 5-3

A good start to the season with the scoreline hiding a lot of progress from training and some excellent play. After a long process of deliberation over venues and timings following a screw-up with BUCS, the men's team finally got to play Imperial Medics at the Royal Free. Unfortunately the day was not to be ours, but we were far from the battered defeated.

Doubles:
We fared better in the doubles game than in the singles, but aside from simple mistakes that further training will take care of, I felt that everyone on the team played very well.

1st Pair:
The first doubles pair (Richard and myself) carried all of our matches, although there was a nervous moment when we lost the first set against their first pair - but we pulled it back, much to their annoyance. I feel that our wins as a pair could have been much more convincing (I still think that our second pair could have beaten both of their doubles pairs), but silly mistakes hampered us. I did notice a huge difference in the technical side of things however, with the work we've done on serving and receiving winning us point after point. Oh and Richard, don't fall on me ever again, you're too bloody tall for that not to hurt, a lot.

2nd Pair:
From what I saw of our second pair I thought that the scorelines didn't do them justice. Once again silly mistakes cost them the points needed to win, but as a pair they played well, Sam's enthusiasm nicely complimenting Kohmal's pure aggression. Some technical work needed definitely, but lots of encouraging play was evident. If I were to give one little criticism I would ask both of them to quit being so friendly with the opposition! Good stuff though.

Singles:
1st:
On the singles side I felt we were hampered by inexperience. Jing is undoubtedly a good player, but I think he still needs more familiarity with the singles game before we will see him at his best. He played tirelessly, and sometimes with a lot more flair than his opposition, pulling off some great winners, but the tactics and experience needed for singles will only come with practice, so keep at it Jing and don't be disheartened. I think the best compliment you could have received from the match was that one of your opposition walked up to you afterward stumped as to how he'd won. If I remember correctly he said that you were the better player...

2nd:
Alex showed great resolve in his games, working for every point against more experienced opposition. He was run ragged, but didn't give up, for which I commend him - that kind of determination will win him matches when the other pieces of the game fall into place. Training will help a lot with the underlying feel of the singles game but I was encouraged by what I saw.

So well done everyone, don't be disappointed, there was a lot of good stuff from all of you and I'm excited to see how well we'll be doing as a team in a few weeks time. Thanks go to the President for his help with the arrangements and to Rupert for his support.
