Well well, a new year and a fantastic match to kick it off. The men's team has had an influx of young talent and it certainly shows.
Just to introduce the new guys; Jai is a second year student, come over to the dark side after being a singles player at UCL last year. Geoff is also a second year who has impressed at the Wednesday sessions. Shivy and Jonathan are both in their first year, with obvious potential to be great singles players. I'll just take this chance to say how much I'm looking forward to this season and seeing the team progress.
Let's start with the singles. Shivy was up first against Imperial's second singles player and I struggle to find a word better than annihilation to describe how he wrapped up that match. Great shot placement, easy. I was playing during his second match but from witness accounts, the score and how quickly it was over, it can't have been much different. An impressive performance to say the least. Jonathan really showed what he's made of as he came through some tight games, Imperial really upping the pace against him. The pressure kept piling on but he kept throwing it back at the opponents until he finished the day with two wins out of two. It's difficult to explain just how much better the second Imperial player became after losing the first match but Jonathan was too good and he buckled at the end. Great stuff.
Myself and Nick; the returned prodigal son of RUMS badminton, had to set an example for the young whippersnappers. We may have had some help from the opposing side, who really didn't look warm for the match - some controlled mid court play and unsportsmanlike delay tactics from our good selves gave them all sorts of trouble. Don't underestimate the oldies I say!
Geoff and Jai came into this match completely under-prepared, thrown together with no doubles match experience at all. If that sounds like an excuse it wasn't, they were brilliant! Their first match-up was against Imperial's second doubles pair, oddly enough the better of Imperial's two on the day. Our lads came out fighting and traded games of 21-19 to take it into a decider. The game could have gone either way but 8-0 overall would have been a little bit harsh on the opponents I feel. Geoff and Jai the merciful…....briefly. Next match they wrapped it up in two straightforward games with some quality play, it sounds simple, it was that simple.
Overall a very nice way to start the year, go RUMS!
