The story
Well, well, well... what to say... We pitched up at the courts at 3pm after a short notice (this morning/afternoon) rearrangement of both the venue and the starting time to find out that we had 2 courts for an hour, an hour gap and then another 2 courts for an hour. Odd. Not altogether impressed with this, we managed to persuade them to book another two courts for the remainder of the first hour before starting up the first round of games.
It always looked like it would be a close match, although with a start that found us 3-1 down at the end of the first hour with two of the remaining games underway and not looking altogether very promising, we did have a long way to go. However, the break must have done us good and with a stunning show of stamina, Nick pulled clear on his second match after losing the first game very narrowly (26-24 or something!). Sam and Chris, after a wobbly start brought home a win against their second pair to bring the overall score to 4-3 with Hamster and I to play their first pair in an attempt for the draw...
We lost the first game 21-19 and then as random foghorns and buzzers announced that we had run out of court time found ourselves to serve at 14-15 on the second game... or not to serve, as it would happen. Stopping just short of stomping out in a blaze of fury, we negotiated a 4-4 result on account of them not booking enough court time and trouped back to the station safe in the knowledge of another well-earned point to add to our league score.
It has to be said, that as a team, we played better this week than previously and that we have improved tremendously since last year, coming into most games now with a fair chance of winning. However, as we can't get promoted now, the season is now really only about one match... UCL 2nds... yes, boys, we are RUMS Badminton and we are coming for you...
